Bremerton, Wash. – The UBCO Heat women's golf team finished its fall season in style, capturing the team title at the OUAZ Fall Invite, held Monday and Tuesday at the Gold Mountain Golf Club, while the men's squad earned a hard-fought fourth-place finish led by Oakley Mayner, who finished tied for second individually.
Showing off their resilience, the women's side rallied from second place, sitting one shot behind the Oregon Tech Owls after two rounds. The Heat closed with a three-over-par 291 in the final round to finish at nine-over-par 873, overtaking the Owls, who finished at 16-over-par 880, and the UBC Thunderbirds, who ended one stroke back at 10-over-par 874.
"I'm super proud of how the girls battled and stayed composed throughout the event, especially against such a strong field," said assistant coach Mackenzie Barrie. "They truly played for each other and earned this win as a team."
Finishing with an impressive 11-under-par 205, Julia Alexander-Carew captured her second individual title of the season, previously winning the Western Washington Invitational a couple of weeks ago.
This time around, the Oakville, Ont., native shot ten strokes better than the second-place finisher with a third round that featured seven birdies to just one bogey as she earned a six-under-par 66. Her first-round score of 67 was equally dominant, as she led both rounds by at least three strokes.
"Shooting -11, winning individually by 10 shots, and breaking her previous UBCO tournament scoring record is incredible," Barrie said. "I'm so happy for her and the entire team. Ayda Matthews also had her best career three-day event, breaking par for the first time ever; it was an amazing way to end the fall season."
Matthews and Kiana Chen both finished in the top 10, helping lift the Heat to the thrilling team-title victory. Matthews finished sixth with a four-over-par 220, while Chen was not far behind with a five-over-par 221 to place eighth.
On the men's side, Mayner starred with a five-under-par 211 to finish second alongside Hunter Auramenko of the Thunderbirds. Mayner shot a first-round-best two-under-par 69, highlighted by two birdies on the back nine, while his third round was also one under par.
"Oakley played solid all three rounds and saved his best for last eagling his 53rd hole and birding his final hole to finish tied for second," said head coach Clay Stothers. "Making only five bogeys on 54 holes, he demonstrated very solid ball striking throughout the event."
Andrew Rouble and Ryan Gillis both ended their tournament with scores of one-under par 215, with both individuals able to notch at least one round under par. The pair tied for ninth place.
The men's side finished fourth with a combined score of seven-under-par 857, just one stroke behind the second-place UBC Thunderbirds and Victoria Vikes, and two strokes back of the tournament-winning OUAZ Spirit.
This concludes a successful fall season for the women's and men's golf teams, with each side earning a silver medal at the Canada West Golf Championships and reaching the podium at multiple events.
