Alexander-Carew earns gold, leads women to runner-up finish at Western Washington invitational

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The UBCO Heat women's golf team claimed their second silver medal in a row this season, finishing second at the Western Washington Invitational.

The two-day National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II tournament, hosted by the Western Washington Vikings at the Bellingham Golf and Country Club, concluded on Tuesday, with the Heat securing the podium spot after finishing with a total score of 42-over-par 618, one stroke ahead of third-place California State LA Golden Eagles. The group shot 28 over par in the opening round to sit in fifth, before improving to 14 over par in the final round.

"It is always nice to see the team improve from day one to two and have a chance to win," said head coach Clay Stothers.

Leading the Heat was fourth-year golfer Julia Alexander-Carew of Oakville, Ont., who finished in first place individually with a two-under-par 142. Alexander-Carew completed round one at three over par before shooting an impressive bogey-free five under second round to win the 10th collegiate tournament of her illustrious UBCO Heat career.

"It was great to see Julia back to her winning ways," Stothers said. "She was on fire and didn't miss a shot; it was like a video game."

Ayda Matthews and Kiana Chen also earned spots in the top ten, tying for tenth at 12-over-par 156, helping the Heat score crucial points to move up the standings.

The Simon Fraser Red Leafs won the tournament, finishing four shots ahead of the Heat at 38-over-par 614.

The women will be back in action next week as they host the Victoria Vikes for the British Columbia Golf Association (BCGA) Matchplay event, on Sunday, Oct. 18 to Monday, Oct. 19, at the Okanagan Golf Club.
