Men’s golf rallies for silver at Canada West Championships

A strong final round pushed the Heat to second place

LETHBRIDGE, Alta. – The UBCO Heat men's golf team came back from their third-place position after the first day to earn a silver medal at the 2026 Canada West Golf Championships.

A team score of 10-over-par 578 put UBCO eight strokes back of the UBC Thunderbirds, who captured their third title in program history at the Paradise Canyon Golf Resort on Tuesday.

The Heat trailed the Alberta Golden Bears by two strokes after the opening round. Using a strong second-round score of three-under-par 281 to Alberta's nine-over-par 293, the Heat catapulted past the Golden Bears in the final standings.

"It was a great learning experience and motivation moving forward," said head coach Clay Stothers. "We love the 16-shot improvement from Day 1, but UBC played too well to catch them in the end."

This marks the fourth consecutive year the Heat have medalled at this event, showcasing the depth of the program.

The Victoria Vikes ended up in third with a 14-over-par 582.

Oakley Mayner finished the tournament at even par with an electric second round that saw him deliver five birdies to just one bogey, moving from outside the top 10 after Day 1 to a fifth-place standing at the end of the tournament. The Canada West Second Team All-Star finished one stroke out of fourth place and four back of the podium.

Coming in seventh was Andrew Rouble, who earned a Second Team All-Star selection for the second straight year. He concluded his two rounds with a two-over-par 144 and fired an even-par second round, which included an eagle on the 13th hole and a birdie on the 18th.

Jackson Murphy finished in the top 10, with a three-over-par 145. Like Rouble, Murphy also scored an eagle at the tournament, doing so on the 18th hole of Day 2.

The other Heat participants at the tournament were Brayden Card (T-14th) and Ryan Gillis (T-31st), who shot five-over-par 147 and 12-over-par-154, respectively, while recording four and five birdies each during their second rounds.

After a week off, the Heat will be back on their home course at the Okanagan Golf Club for a match play event against the Victoria Vikes on Sunday, Oct. 18 and Monday, Oct. 19.
