Box Score KELOWNA, B.C. – In the inaugural game of the 2022 season for the UBC Okanagan Heat men's soccer team on Friday evening against the Victoria Vikes, Jacobo Saenz Ramos (Monterrey, Mexico) scored in the 73rd minute to help the Heat to a 1-1 draw at Nonis Field.
It was a night of firsts for the Heat as Saenz Ramos, a second-year forward from Monterrey, Mexico, buried his first Canada West goal while rookie defender Nicholas Lechelt of Edmonton recorded his first career assist. Keeper Jaxson Scholfield of South Delta, B.C., also registered his first start in goal.
It was a spectacular introduction to Canada West play for Scholfield who stood tall against a Vikes' penalty kick in the opening minutes. The diving save was quite the way to make his first save in Heat colours.
Jacobo Saenz Ramos, finished the match with two shots in 90 minutes. A long ball from Lechelt found the foot of Jacobo Saenz Ramos, who evened the game with a pretty chip of the Vikes' keeper, earning the Heat's only goal of the night.
Fifth-year forward Nick Park, a native of Vancouver, scored the Vikes lone goal in the 52nd minute. He would finish the game with three shots, with two on target, in 73 minutes on the pitch.
The draw leaves both UBCO and UVIC with equivalent 0-0-1 records as both teams will get a crack at their respective first wins of the season tomorrow night. The UVIC squad will be traveling to Kamloops to face off with the TRU Wolfpack (1-0-0) while the Heat will finish off the weekend on the home turf.
Next up for the Heat is a date with sister-school UBC Thunderbirds (0-1-0) on Saturday at 6 p.m at Nonis Field. Tickets for the game are free for all fans.
