Woodroffe sets Canada West single-season saves record against TRU

KAMLOOPS, B.C. — A week after becoming Canada West's all-time leader in career saves, Ronan Woodroffe added another record on Friday. Woodroffe made 10 stops to push his season total to 106, passing UNBC's Daniel Zadravec's single-season record of 99. Despite the milestone, the UBCO Heat fell 3-1 to the Thompson Rivers WolfPack at Hillside Stadium.

UBCO's Mosi Klusman found the back of the net on his only attempt, with Allan Yin setting him up. Carter Brown led the Heat with two shots, while the graduating keeper went the full 90 minutes between the sticks.

Alesandro Comita led the WolfPack attack, scoring once and putting four of his five shots on target. Noel Poole and Liam Freathy each matched Comita with a goal, while James Rainbird was dishing out multiple assists, setting up two of the three WolfPack goals.

Under heavy pressure from the opening whistle, the Heat fell behind 2-0 on a low, powerful drive from outside the box from Comita and a toe-poke finish from Poole after he won the race to a well-placed through ball. The Heat managed to strike back in the 31st minute, when Klusman finished off a low cross from Yin to cut the deficit to 2-1 at the break. The hosts outshot the Heat 14-1 in the half, but Woodroffe kept them in it with seven stops, the fourth of which broke Zadravec's single-season record.

Freathy restored the two-goal cushion in the 58th minute, heading home a Rainbird corner. The Heat matched their hosts with four corners in the half and pushed late, generating three shots and two corners in the final four minutes, but only Brown's effort in the dying seconds tested the WolfPack keeper. Woodroffe added three more stops after the break to finish the night with 10.

The Heat close out their road weekend and season against the UNBC Timberwolves on Sunday, Oct. 25, at 2:30 p.m. in Prince George, B.C.
