VICTORIA, B.C. —
Ronan Woodroffe etched his name into the Canada West record book on Saturday, making 10 saves to become the conference's all-time leader in career saves. Amidst the record-setting night, the UBCO Heat fell 2-0 to the Victoria Vikes at Centennial Stadium.
Woodroffe, a fifth-year goalkeeper, faced 12 shots on target over the full 90 minutes and turned aside 10 of them, giving him 357 career saves. He now has moved past Tyrone Venhola of the UNBC Timberwolves (356) for the top spot in Canada West history.
Gavin La Montagne registered the Heat's lone shot of the match.
Evan Larson opened the scoring for Victoria and finished with two shots, while Rees Goertzen converted his lone shot on target to seal the win. Wesley Jones led the Vikes with six shots, and he and Alex Moody each put three on target. Between the sticks, Matthew McConnach went the full 90 minutes for the clean sheet without making a save.
The Vikes wasted no time as Larson met a cross with a half-volley from the top of the box in the first minute of the game. The hosts dominated the rest of the half, outshooting the Heat 13-0 and earning seven corners, but the graduating keeper kept them at bay with eight saves to keep it a one-goal game going into the break.
Woodroffe added saves on Jones and Mattheus Achadinha after halftime, with the second marking his 10th of the night and moving him past Venhola into the record book. The Vikes kept up the pressure with three corners in a seven-minute stretch, while La Montagne's wide attempt in the 82nd minute was the Heat's only scoring look. Goertzen sealed it in the 86th minute, burying a shot into the top right corner from the middle of the box.
The Heat continue their road swing with a matchup against the Thompson Rivers WolfPack on Friday, Oct. 23, at 7:30 p.m. in Kamloops, B.C., as they look to notch a victory in the Presidents' Cup race.
