Box Score KELOWNA, B.C. – In the final game of the season, the UBC Okanagan Heat men's soccer team's momentum from a late game goal would not be enough for a victory as they were topped on Saturday night by the UFV Cascades 2-1.
It would be a scoreless and chippy first half as neither team would be able to find an opportunity to capitalize on.
The Cascades opened up the scoring in the 58th minute with a goal off the boot of Tobias Speiss of Nuremberg, Germany.
In the 72nd minute of play, the Heat had their best chance to find the equalizer. The opportunity came with a pass from Kelowna product Taylor Piche to Richmond native, Josh Bhandal who headed the ball just wide of the net.
A penalty kick for UFV in the 76th minute would prove fatal to the Heat as Speiss once again would find the back of the net, putting the Cascades up 2-0.
Late in the game, Owen Spicker (Langley, B.C.), the top scorer for the Heat this year with three total goals, would get the first and only goal for the Heat in 83rd minute. Salt Spring Island product, Jimmy Steel took a shot which was fumbled by UFV goalie, Jackson Cowx (Surrey, B.C.), allowing Spicker to slip the ball past the keeper and put the Heat on the scoreboard.
Nicholas Reitsma (Kelowna, B.C.) would finish the night with three saves in his final game with the Heat squad. In his Canada West career, Reitsma would make a total of 178 saves for the Heat.
For the Cascades, Cowx would make one save in the Saturday night action.
Prior to the contest, the Heat recognized their six graduating seniors, including Piche, Spicker, Steel, Reitsma, Aaron Mulama and captain Sam McDonald.
