Box Score KELOWNA, B.C. – The UBC Okanagan Heat men's soccer team's playoff push was ended on Friday night as the home squad, which needed to win both games this weekend to have an opportunity to move forward, was topped 1-0 by the UFV Cascades at Nonis Sports Field.
In the first half, the Heat had an opportunity to take the lead off of a corner kick by Salt Spring Island product, Jimmy Steel, in the 24th minute of play. Steel's corner kick would find the boot of Josh Bhandal (Richmond, B.C.) but his shot would be stopped by Cascades goalie and the Heat would remain scoreless.
The Cascades would open up the scoring in the 38th minute and would be the only time either team could find the back of the net all night. The Cascades found an opportunity after an awkward touch by UBCO's Sam McDonald sent the ball towards UFV's Jun Won Choi (Surrey, B.C.) who then found the back of the net.
Steel (Salt Spring Island, B.C.) would have another chance to tie it up for the Heat late in the game with a free kick which went just high of the net in the 85th minute of play. Tega Ejumabone (Calgary, Alta.) and Malachi Emerson (Surrey, B.C.) would both put up two shots on goal for the Heat but ultimately no one would be able to capitalize on the opportunities.
In net for the Heat, Nicholas Reitsma (Kelowna, B.C.) would finish the night with one save out of the two shots on goal from the Cascades. UFV's keeper, Jackson Cowx (Surrey, B.C.) would make three saves to get the shutout.
UBCO will wrap up their season on Saturday evening when they host the Cascades on Graduating Senior's Night. Prior to the 6:30 p.m. kickoff, the Heat will recognize their six graduating seniors, including Reitsma, McDonald, Steel, Aaron Mulama, Owen Spicker and Taylor Piche.
