KELOWNA, B.C. – The UBC Okanaga Heat men's soccer team's second-half charge would not be enough to overtake the No. 9 nationally-ranked Victoria Vikes as they were topped 1-0 at Nonis Sports Field on Friday afternoon.

Tight defensive play from both sides would keep the game scoreless throughout the first half. UBCO goalkeeper Nicholas Reitsma of Kelowna, B.C., would make three saves in the first 45 minutes of play, contributing to his total of nine saves in the afternoon affair and tying his personal record in Canada West action for most saves in a single game.

Vikes keeper Harjot Nijjar of Surrey, B.C., would make two saves in the first half with both shots coming from UBCO's Pierson Stanley of North Vancouver, B.C. Nijjar woud finish the match with a total of five saves for the Vikes.

In the 62nd minute, Victoria's Ian Whibley of Errington, B.C., would score the first and only goal of the game.

Searching for the equalizer, the Heat had a series of chances in the 67th minute of play. The first shot came off the boot of White Rock, B.C. product Hayden Johnson. Nijjar deflected the shot off his gloves back to Johnson who set up Owen Spicker (Langley, B.C.), who's shot was again stopped by Nijjar.

Leading the offensive charge throughout the game for the Heat was Stanley, who finished the game with three shots on goal. Stanley would put up the last opportunity for the Heat in the 89th minute of play with the shot going just wide of the net. Spicker also played a key role in offensive effort, contributing two shots on goal for the Heat.

The two teams will meet again tomorrow at Nonis Sports Field with kickoff set for 1:30 p.m.
