Box Score Kelowna, B.C. - On Bell Let's Talk night, the Heat's late-game comeback would fall just short as the Wesmen would take the game (67-60) on Friday night at the UBC Okanagan Gymnasium.
Late in the fourth quarter, the Heat began to make their comeback with a series of baskets from Jaeli Ibbetson and Kelsey Falk. In the last minute of play, the Heat came within six points of the Wesmen with the ball in their hands but ultimately couldn't complete the comeback.
Senior Jordan Korol would finish her penultimate home game with a career-high 23 boards, including 10 offensive to set a new program record in Canada West play.
The loss drops the Heat to (2-15) as the Wesmen improve to (9-6) on the season.
Heat head coach Bobby Mitchell was happy with his team's effort as they showed a lot of toughness throughout.
"We definitely stuck with it, I loved our battle. We just wanted to give ourselves an opportunity in the fourth quarter and we did that tonight."
Kelsey Falk would finish with a double-double for the Heat thanks to 13 points and 12 boards, while Jaeli Ibbetson also chipped in 17 points and seven rebounds.
Anna Kernaghan led the visitors with 21 points while Robyn Boulanger also finished in double-figures with 14.
It would be a back-to-back game with neither team able to break away, ending the first quarter tied up at (14-14).
The Wesmen would outscore the Heat in the second quarter (20-15), but UBCO was able to hold them to a (34-29) lead. The hot shooting Wesmen were lead by Kernaghan with 12 of her 21 total points for the visitors in the first half.
Heading into the second half, the visitors would begin to pull away as a series of baskets by Jessica Dyck would increase their lead to (55-41) at the end of the third quarter.
Despite the Wesmen shooting a total of 44.4% compared to the Heat's 23.5%, the home squad was able to keep the visitor's lead at bay. Heat senior Jordan Korol's career-high 23 rebounds would be key in halting Winnipeg's charge.
The two teams will rematch tomorrow night at 4 p.m. in the UBC Okanagan Gymnasium.
