Langley, BC - A four minute run in the second quarter would be enough to do in the Heat women's basketball team on Friday night as they fell 81-62 to the Trinity Western Spartans in their season-opener.

The visiting Heat would hold a 25-21 lead after the opening quarter, but 17 straight points from the Spartans near the end of the first half would blow the game open and the deficit was too much to overcome.

Jordan Korol would finish with a double-double for the visitors with 16 points and 10 boards to lead all Heat players in both categories.

The two teams will meet back up tomorrow night at the Langley Events Center with tip-off slated for 5 p.m. PT.

Inside the Numbers:

UBCO finished the night with just seven turnovers to TWU's 13.

The Spartan shot 52.5 per cent from the field, while holding UBCO to 31.4 per cent. The Spartans were 7 for 15 from 3-point range, while UBCO was just 5 for 24.

UBCO scored 25 points in the first quarter in their season opener tonight, in 80 quarters last season the Heat only topped 25 points once.

First half:

UBCO would come out strong in the opening quarter, shooting 59% during the opening 10 minutes, with Vanessa Botteselle and Jordan Korol having six points each in the set. This superb offense was good enough for a four point lead after the first quarter (25-21) and would have the lead until 31-30.

Second half:

The third quarter saw TWU shoot 50 per cent (7-14) from the field, while holding the Heat to 21.1 per cent shooting (4-19) as the Spartans extended their lead to 16 points, 67-51. In a low-scoring final frame, the Spartans edged the Heat 14-11 over the last 10 minutes.

Individual performances:

UBCO

• Vanessa Botteselle would do a little bit of everything on the night for the Heat, tallying 15 points along with six rebounds four assists and two steals in 33 minutes of action
• Guard Claire Feasby would come off the bench to score seven points for the visitors, including a perfect four-for-four at the foul line.

Trinity Western

• Tessa Ratzlaff would sizzle all night for the Spartans as she had a game-high 25 points on 11-21 shooting and would also grab eight boards on the night.
• The other two Trinity Western players who finished in double-figures were Sara Buckingham (19) and Jessie Brown (14).
