RECAP: A draw at MRU rounds out clean weekend for Heat men

Box Score

Grayson B. Leahy - Heat Sports Information

CALGARY - The UBC Okanagan Heat men's soccer team played to a scoreless draw against the Mount Royal Cougars on Saturday afternoon to finish off their Alberta weekend trip. Heat keeper Mitch McCaw also cemented a clean weekend, allowing no goals against the Calgary Dinos on Saturday or the Cougars on Sunday.

With the draw, the first match played even for UBC Okanagan on the season, the Heat earned a very important four points in the standings from these two road matches in Calgary.

First half chances

Despite a few chances apiece in the opening half, neither side was able to get off any shots that posed a real threat to the scoreless outing. MRU's Yusuph Kalenga had the best opportunity of the first 45, putting a ball on with a free kick that had McCaw making his first save of the day.

Second half chances

The second half saw the best chances of the match for the Heat. Wyatt Gilbert had an opportunity in the latter stages of the half to bury one for the Heat, but was unable to match his step with a pass from Aaron Mulama, and missed his spot by just enough to put the ball into the outside of the net. In the 89th minute it was Taylor Piche with the opportunity, as he was set up in position to get a head on a cross deep in the Cougars end, but the ball sailed just high and over the crossbar, holding the score at zero apiece for the final whistle.

Keeper Stats

Both Mitch McCaw for the Heat and Kyran Valley for the Cougars earned their third clean sheets of the season on Sunday afternoon. Of the 10 recorded shots by MRU on the day, McCaw made five saves to keep the Cougars off the board. On the other end Valley had a lone save to make, early in the match (17') to keep out a shot from Corbin Beauchemin, on four recorded shots for the Heat.

What's Next

The UBC Okanagan Heat (3-3-1) will play next on September 30, when they host the Trinity Western Spartans (5-2-3). Next for the Mount Royal Cougars (2-3-3) will be the opening leg of the Crowchild Classic, against the Calgary Dinos (3-5-0) on October 7.
