This week for the Heat: The season opens with a bang for the Heat men's soccer club as they play host to the two top teams in the coaches preseason poll in a conference opener before students are even on campus. On Saturday the preseason's second ranked team, a team that competed in last fall's CIS national championship tournament, the Victoria Vikes hit the Nonis Field on the Okanagan campus of UBC to face off against the host UBC Okanagan men's soccer sqaud. The match will be played in the heat of the day on Saturday (Aug. 27) with a 3 p.m. start time.

On Sunday the Heat will play preseason No. 1 ranked Thunderbirds, the T-birds went undefeated through last years Canada West campaign and ended up winning a CIS bronze medal. The sister schools will be squaring off at 3 p.m. on Sunday, August 28th on Nonis Field.

Current Form: The men had a grueling preseason in which they played six matches in eight days, all in the Okanagan and all in very warm temperatures. The UBC Okanagan men should be ready for the heat this weekend on the field while hosting their home openers. The team went (1-2-3) in the six matches.

Key Players: With a roster that saw a half dozen key players graduate the program the Heat have turned over nearly one third of their roster, how this teams communicates and executes, as a team, will be key for their success this weekend.

Overall Head to Head (v UVic - 0-1-3): The Heat have yet to notch a win versus their Island squad, however they have played the Vikes to three straight draws - two in Victoria and one in Kelowna.

Overall Head to Head (v UBC - 0-4-0, 0-1 PS): The Heat have yet to notch a win versus their sister school. They also played their only Canada West postseason match against the T-birds, falling  (3-0) in Vancouver.

Manny Straith / M / Victoria, BC / 5

Key performer: Luke Warkentin (Forward, 2nd yr. Surrey, BC): Leading the UBC Okanagan squad in his freshman season with four goals second year forward Luke Warkentin will be relied upon for his striking abilities even more in his sophomore season. The Heat finished 12th in the conference in goals scores with 12 in 2015, and as strong as their defense was it was finishing on offense that may have caused the squad to miss the playoffs for the first as the team struggled to score consistently all season long. Adding significance to Luke's role on the team is the loss of the team's second leading goal getter from last season in Enzo Paal. If Luke can continue his growth as an offensive dynamo in Canada West throughout his second campaign the Heat will be in good shape to make another run at the playoffs in 2016.

Victoria Vikes:
Favorites to once again represent Canada West at the CIS national championships the Vikes will look to reload after losing the CIS Player of the Year in Cam Hundel to graduation.

Current Form: Victoria just played in a single exhibition match holding down the Langara Falcons for a (1-0) victory.

Key Players: Adam Ravenhill, a fifth year defender from Victoria will captain the Vikes squad and try to improve the fourth best defence in the conference from a year ago.

Team Stat: In losing Hundal the Victoria team lost their leading goal scoreer and playmaker, he finished last year with 13 points (8 goals, 5 assists).

Key performer: Adam Ravenhill (Defender, 5th yr, Victoria, B.C.): Heading into a season that will see a large amount of turnover for the Vikes, fifth-year captain Adam Ravenhill will be relied upon as a leader both on and off the field. The smart defender reads the game well and is a big piece of a strong returning defensive core for the defending Canada West silver medalists.

UBC Thunderbirds:
Their only loss to a Canadian team last year was in the national semi-final that went to penalty kicks (5-4) to York. The devastating turn of events for the dominating UBC squad denied the school its 14th national championship in men's soccer. To open the season the 2015 dominant squad once again opened the coaches polls as the team to beat.

Current Form: Just four matches played for the Thunderbirds in the preseason, all to school that play in the NCAA. UBC did play their cross-town rival, SFU, to a scoreless draw after losing to Oregon State (3-1) and Seattle University (3-1). The T-birds dropped Seattle Pacific (1-0) for their only win of the preseason.

Key Players: Who will replace the 26 combine goals scored from the group of graduating students including: Harry Lakhan, Gagan Dosanjh, Milad Mehrabi, Sean Einarsson, and Justin Wallace? Perhaps a team that outscores opponents last season to a tune of 36-5 will become even better defensively as they still have [Fifth-year defender] Bryan Fong and [All- Canadian goalkeeper] Chad Bush.

Team Stat: Last years squad never trailed all season and its only loss was in PKs.
