KELOWNA, B.C. — The UBCO Heat men's soccer team played to a 2-2 draw with the Trinity Western Spartans in their final regular season game at Nonis Sports Field on Sunday afternoon.
The first half began with UBCO establishing an early offensive presence. Senior
Jacobo Saenz Ramos nearly put the Heat ahead in the eighth minute with a shot hitting the post. Goalkeeper
Mattias Ferraro kept the home team secure with key saves, stopping efforts from the Spartans' Marc Huizenga and Marcel Bona.
UBCO maintained pressure with
David Weinberg delivering multiple corner kicks, and
Malachi Emerson testing the Trinity Western goalkeeper. The persistent efforts paid off in the final moments of the half when
Theodore Zurowski scored with an assist from Saenz Ramos, giving the Heat a 1-0 lead at the break.
The second half began with UBCO extending their lead when Emerson converted a penalty kick at the 47th minute, marking his second goal of the season.
Despite the Heat's persistent offensive efforts, including multiple shots and corner kicks by
Varun Kothary and Zurowski, Trinity Western's defence, led by goalkeeper Austin Petri, managed to keep additional goals at bay.
Towards the end of the half, the Spartans mounted a comeback. Charles Nana scored in the 90th minute, reducing the deficit to one. Just moments later, Jackson Van den Brink found the net, leveling the score in stoppage time. The half concluded with a 2-2 draw.
In his final game with UBCO, Emerson scored one goal on two shots, with both attempts on target. Zurowski contributed with one goal, the first of his Heat career, and led the team with five shots, four of which were on goal. Saenz Ramos, also playing in his final game with the Heat, recorded the team's only assist. Ferraro made five saves, facing seven shots in total during the full 90 minutes of play.
Prior to the game, the Heat honoured their five graduating seniors, including Emerson, Saenz Ramos,
Matteo Clarke,
Alex Sol and
Aidan Young.

- Emerson's goal was the 10th of his career as he finishes his time with the Heat ranked second all-time for career goals
- Saenz Ramos' first-half assist was the fifth of his career, moving him into third all-time at UBCO
