BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Brayden Card finished just outside the individual podium as he led the men's golf team to a third-place finish at the Western Washington Invitational.
Weather wrecked havoc at the Bellingham Golf & Country Club, forcing organizers to shorten the tournament from a two-day, three-round competition to a two-round event completed on Monday.
The Heat shot a three-under-par 573, finishing behind the first-place Western Washington Vikings and Colorado Christian Cougars. Matching up against the other Canadian schools in attendance, UBCO finished two strokes ahead of the SFU Red Leafs and seven ahead of the UBC Thunderbirds.
In the first round, Card turned heads, opening with a tournament-best six-under-par 66 that included four birdies on the back nine. The first-year golfer's momentum continued in the second round as he made birdies on two of the first three holes before ending his tournament with two more down the stretch.
Finishing close together, Andrew Rouble and Oakley Mayner tied for 13th and 19th, respectively. Rouble ended his tournament at one-under-par 143, while Mayner finished just one stroke above par.
The team's focus now shifts to the Canada West Championships where the Heat will look to capture their third consecutive conference title. This year's edition takes place at the Paradise Canyon Golf Resort in Lethbridge, Alta., from Monday, Oct. 5 to Tuesday, Oct. 6.
