Canadians go undefeated through the tournament, defeating the USA in five sets in the gold medal match

BURNABY, B.C. – UBCO Heat men's volleyball head coach Scott Koskie can add another medal to his trophy case after helping guide Canada to gold at the NORCECA U19 Men's Continental Championship that wrapped up on Sunday on the campus of Simon Fraser University.

Koskie, who was serving as an assistant coach with Canada at the event, was part of the coaching staff that led the red and white to an undefeated record against some of the top teams in North America.

"It was a great two weeks working with the U19 program and we are extremely proud of the effort these young men put into this program," said Koskie after the tournament. "It is a unique experience for these players to come together as a team and then represent their country in an international event with very limited training. The athletes conducted themselves in an exceptionally professional manner and were committed to performing at the highest level that they could."

The Canadians were a perfect 3-0 in round robin play, defeating Barbados, Costa Rica and Mexico to directly qualify for the semifinals.

With a spot in the gold medal match on the line, Canada swept Costa Rica in straight sets, setting up a showdown with the Americans for gold.

In a thrilling gold medal match, Canada rallied from a 2-1 deficit, winning the fourth set 25-23 before edging the USA in the fifth set 17-15 to claim the championship.

"The final was a high level of volleyball played in front a very passionate Canadian crowd which will be something I will always remember," added Koskie. "I am very proud to have been a part of the group that captured the first gold medal at this age category for Canada and qualified for the 2027 World Championships."

The medal is the second that Koskie has captured as a member of a Canadian team coaching staff since coming to UBCO. Last summer, he helped the Next Gen team win bronze at the NORCECA Pan Am Cup.
