HENDERSON, Nev. – The UBCO Heat men's and women's golf teams continued their strong run of form to open 2026 as they swept both the team and individual titles at the Las Vegas Warrior Invitational, an NAIA event hosted by the Winona State Warriors at the Legacy Golf Club.
The Heat men, who trailed by four shots entering the third and final round on Thursday, used a big day from eventual champion
Oakley Mayner as well as
Ryan Vest to shoot eight-under par 280 and win going away by 16 shots. UBCO earned their fourth win of the season, and fourth in their last five tournaments, finishing at even-par 864 over 54 holes.
UT Dallas finished second at 16-over par 880 while host Winona State was third at 19-over par 883.
Mayner, a rookie from Kelowna, picked up his first career university victory as he finished at six-under par 210. That left him tied with Winona State's Peyton Coahran and the two would go to a playoff to determine the winner. Mayner would come away with the victory thanks to a birdie on the sixth playoff hole.
The Kelowna SS graduate was lights out on Thursday, firing seven birdies to shoot five-under par 67 to earn a spot in the playoff. He was one of three players to finish under par for the tournament.
Vest, originally from Vernon, joined Mayner with a five-under par 67 to move up 11 spots on the leaderboard in the third round, finishing tied for sixth at two-over par 218.
Teammates
Andrew Rouble and
Ryan Gillis also finished inside the Top 10, with Rouble tied for eighth at three-over par 219 and Gillis tied for tenth at four-over par 220.
Meanwhile, the Heat women matched the feat of the men as they won their third team title of the season, shooting 55-over par 919 and winning by 29 shots. Missouri Southern was second at 84-over par 948 while host Winona State was third at 92-over par 956.
Leading the way for the Heat once again was
Julia Alexander-Carew, winning her ninth tournament with UBCO. The third-year Oakville, Ont., native opened with a three-under par 69 before carding rounds of three-over par 75 and one-over par 73 to finish at one-over par 217. That left her 11 strokes clear of Katarina Chynoranska from Missouri Southern who finished in second place.
Fifth-year
Lauren Nedo had another strong showing for the Heat, finishing in third place at 16-over par 232 while
Shinyao Zhang and
Bess Chan joined their teammates inside the Top 10.
Zhang, a rookie in her first tournament of 2026, tied for fifth-place at 18-over par 234 with Chan in a tie for seventh at 20-over par 236.
Both UBCO golf teams will compete in one final tournament this spring as they travel to Chilliwack, B.C., for the BC Match Play Championship. The teams will then reconvene in Lévis, Que., in June for the 2026 Canadian University/College Championship.
