LÉVIS, Que. – The UBCO Heat men's golf team dominated the field at the 2026 Canadian University/College Championship, presented by BDO at Golf La Tempête to win their first national championship on Friday.
Led by rookie
Oakley Mayner, UBCO shot 19-under par over three rounds, 10 shots ahead of the Montréal Carabins who finished in second place, to take home the team championship. The victory marks the fifth of the season for UBCO in nine events, which includes winning their second consecutive Canada West title back in October.
"It's hard to put into words what this means to our team," said Heat head coach
Clay Stothers following the victory. "I'm just so happy for the boys and I'm grateful for them believing in this program when we have come from nowhere."
"This was seven years in the making," continued Stothers. "The weather was extremely difficult so for them to perform the way they did was very impressive."
Mayer, a native of Kelowna, B.C., and graduate of Kelowna SS, had an outstanding week for the Heat. The arts major opened with four-under par 68 on Tuesday followed by a five-under par 67 in round two on Wednesday. He capped his week with a one-over par 73 in round three to finish at eight-under par 208 and win the individual silver medal while also claiming All-Canadian honours.
"Oakley was amazing all week," said Stothers. "He went bogey-free over the first two rounds and just couldn't miss. It was fun to witness and he has an extremely bright future in this sport."
Two other members of the Heat finished inside the Top 10 on the individual leaderboard. Fourth-year
Andrew Rouble earned his second Top 10 finish at the national championship as he tied for eighth at three-under par 211.
Second-year
Ryan Vest joined Rouble at three-under par 211 in his first Canadian University/College Championship with UBCO.
For the second year in a row, third-year
Ryan Gillis tied for 12th place at two-under par 214 as four Heat golfers finished inside the Top 12, paving the way for the team title.
By winning the national championship, the Heat have earned an exemption into the 2026 Canadian Collegiate Invitationals. The men's tournament will take place September 12-15 at Öviinbyrd in MacTier, Ont.
The 2026 Canadian University/College Championship, presented by BDO was reduced to a 54-hole event following play being suspended for the day just before 12 p.m. local time on Thursday due to heavy rainfall and resumed early Friday morning.
