Men’s cross country gains valuable experience at Canada West Championships

Heat go up against seven other schools at conference competition

CALGARY – The UBCO Heat men's cross country team competed at the 2026 Canada West Championships on the campus of St. Mary's University, hosted by the Calgary Dinos.

In the team standings, the Heat placed eighth, while the Victoria Vikes placed first once again and along with the women's team, swept the team titles for the second consecutive year. The Regina Cougars came in second, while the UBC Thunderbirds captured bronze.

"We knew coming into this championship that we were still building our depth and experience, and that we would have to work hard to compete against some very strong programs," said head coach Malindi Elmore. "Today's result reflects where we are as a team right now, but it doesn't have to define where we go from here. We have to keep building on where we are now and continue showing up with the commitment and competitiveness needed to move forward."

UBCO saw Justin Monteleone finish in the top 50, as he ran the eight-kilometre race in a time of 28 minutes and 32 seconds, placing 48th.

The next-best finisher for the Heat was Basil Parkins, who was just under a minute behind Monteleone, crossing the line in 29:31.
