EDMONTON - The UBCO Heat track team opened their 2026 meet schedule at the Golden Bears Open this past weekend at the University of Alberta competing in the 3000m and 1000m races.
Leading the way for the Heat was fourth-year
Kyle Porter. The Ottawa native finished second in the men's 3000m race, winning an exciting sprint to the finish to edge Alberta's Ben Higham by two one-hundredths of a second. Porter posted a time of eight minutes, 46.72 seconds, achieving the Heat's internal Canada West qualifying time.
In the women's 3000m, fourth-year
Ella Wigmore of West Vancouver, B.C., earned a third-place finish and achieved the Heat's internal Canada West qualifying time, crossing the line in 10:24.45.
Meanwhile, in the 1000m,
Anna-Veronika Titova of Surrey, B.C., was the Heat's top finisher, posting a sixth-place finish in 3:06.50.
Basil Parkins of Victoria, B.C., topped the men's finishers in the event, crossing the line in ninth thanks to a time of 2:33.67.
The Heat track teams will return to action on February 6 when they compete in the Gary Reed Invitational in Kamloops.
