HEAT THIS WEEK: Softball wraps up regular season at home, five teams on the road

Softball wraps up their regular season ahead of the WCSA Championship while men's golf, cross country and men's and women's soccer hit the road

KELOWNA, B.C. - It's a busy weekend for the Heat. Softball wraps up their regular season at home, while five other teams hit the road. Men's golf kicks off their fall season in Washington, soccer continues their campaign, and cross country competes in Vancouver in their second race of the fall season. Women's volleyball and basketball continue their preseason schedules, while men's basketball begins its 2025-26 preseason with a matchup against the VIU Mariners.

Following a successful road trip last weekend, the Heat (14-4-1) return home for the final games of the regular season before heading into WCSA Playoff Weekend on October 3rd-5th. 

Last weekend, the team went (4-0-1), extending their win streak to thirteen. Fourth-year outfielder Bella Green was lights out in Lethbridge, recording eight hits in 15 plate appearances to raise her batting average to .455. She drove in four runs, moving into a tie for third on the team with 17 RBIs and added five putouts in the field.

The Heat will look to carry this momentum into their home games this weekend, utilizing the support of the home crowd as they continue preparing for the WCSA Championship.

Women's Basketball 
September 26th vs. Alberta Pandas - 4:00 p.m. - UBCO Gymnasium 
September 27th vs. Manitoba Bisons - 4:00 p.m. - UBCO Gymnasium 

Women's basketball continues preseason play at home this weekend with a pair of exhibition games against the Alberta Pandas and Manitoba Bisons. 

Last weekend, the Heat opened their exhibition schedule with an impressive 80-68 win over the Guelph Gryphons. Third-year forward Tennyson McCarthy led the pack with 17 points and 13 rebounds, while second-year guard Tsuki Tsuzuki came off the bench, adding 11 points playing just 17 minutes. 

Men's Basketball
September 26th vs.VIU Mariners - 8:00 p.m. - UBCO Gymnasium 

Men's basketball gets preseason underway this weekend with a matchup against the VIU Mariners. The exhibition will give head coach Clay Pottinger his first look at a roster that features 12 new faces as the Heat prepare for their regular season opener on October 24th against the Thompson Rivers WolfPack.

September 29th - 30th - Western Washington Invitational - Bellingham GCC - Bellingham, Wash.

Men's golf hits off their season in Washington, competing in their first two fall tournaments: the Kevin Bishop Invitational, hosted by Saint Martin's University and the Western Washington Invitational, both NCAA Division II events. 

The team will use these tournaments to prepare for the Canada West Golf Championship in Chilliwack this October, where the Heat secured a first-place finish for the title last season. 

This summer, the group finished ninth at the Canadian University/College Championship. Led by Ryan Gillis, who shot even par to tie for 12th. The five-man team, including Andrew Rouble, Ryan Gillis, Thomas Lemay, Chris Jo, and Carl-Hanns Arndt, combined for a score of 1197, 45 over par across the four rounds.  

This weekend, Gillis, Rouble, and Jo will once again represent the Heat in Washington, along with rookie Oakley Mayner and transfer Ryan Vest.

Women's Volleyball

Women's volleyball continues their 2025-26 preseason in Langley, competing in the West Coast Classic.

Two weeks ago, the Heat faced off against the TRU WolfPack, splitting the weekend 1-1. They will look to build on that experience as they take on the Bisons on Friday to open up a schedule that will see them play three games in three days.

Women's Soccer 
September 26th at UFV Cascades - 7:00 p.m. - Abbotsford, B.C.
September 27th at Trinity Western Spartans - 6:00 p.m. - Langley, B.C.

Women's soccer hits the road this weekend, facing the Cascades on Friday in Abbotsford, followed by a matchup against Trinity Western in Langley on Saturday. 
Last weekend, during Homecoming, the team showed promise early on, but ultimately fell 5-0 to the U SPORTS No. 1-ranked UBC Thunderbirds (8-0-0) at Nonis. 

Looking ahead, the Heat will lean on their history of success against UFV, holding a six-game win streak over the Cascades since 2022, and will aim to carry that momentum into Friday's matchup. Saturday will present a tougher challenge as they face U SPORTS No. 8-ranked Spartans, a team they have yet to defeat. The squad will look to make history and capture their first win against the ranked team this weekend. 

Men's Soccer

The men are on the road this weekend for some tough competition, heading to Victoria on Friday to face U SPORTS No. 8-ranked Victoria Vikes, followed by a trip to Vancouver on Saturday to take on the U SPORTS No. 1-ranked UBC Thunderbirds. 

Last weekend in Edmonton, the Heat earned a 1-1 tie in their second match. Gavin La Montagne stood out, utilizing some impressive footwork to set up Dario Fedele for the tying goal just three minutes after the Griffins had taken the lead, despite the Heat being down 10 men. This marked the team's second tie of the season, and they will look to build on that performance as they face this weekend's challenging ranked opponents. 

Cross Country
September 28th at Vancouver Spirit Run - 11:40 am - Vancouver, B.C. - Women
September 28th at Vancouver Spirit Run - 12:40 am - Vancouver, B.C. - Men

Cross Country hits the road this weekend, heading down to Vancouver for the Vancouver Spirit Run at Jericho Beach. 

The Heat opened their season back in August at the Fast Days of Summer, where fourth-year runner Kyle Porter led the men with a time of 15:45, while Lauren McNeil posted a third-place finish for the women in 15:53. 

Last season at the Vancouver Spirit Event, the Heat had strong showings with six athletes finishing in the Top 20. On the women's side, Kristen Smith led the group, shaving 46 seconds off her previous year for a sixth-place finish, followed by Brooke Lawlor and Lys Milne. The men's team was led by Owen Lloyd, who cut 1:04 off his 2023 time, followed by Kyle Porter and Isaac Baker.
