The Heat women head to Kamloops as the defending silver medalists following a strong showing at Idylwylde Golf and Country Club in Sudbury, Ont., a year ago. The result marked the third consecutive year that UBCO has been on the podium at the national championship following bronze medals in both 2022 and 2023.
Meanwhile, the Heat men had their best-ever result at the national championship in 2024, finishing in sixth place. UBCO heads to nationals this season as the Canada West Champions following their dominant victory at the Okanagan Golf Club in October.
This year's women's team will once again be led by
Julia Alexander-Carew. Heading into her third season with UBCO, Alexander-Carew is coming off a dominant 2024-25 season with UBCO. She finished first or second in five of the six events she competed in, including a silver medal finish at last year's national championship to also earn All-Canadian honours.
Joining Alexander-Carew in leading the Heat's hunt for a national championship will be veteran-ladened squad, including
Lauren Nedo,
Emily Cornwall and
Bess Chan. Cornwall and Nedo both earned top 10 finishes at the national championship a season ago while Chan, who was UBCO's top finisher at the 2024 Canada West Championship, will compete in her second national championship after helping the Heat win bronze in 2023.
Competing in their third national championship, the Heat men will be led by
Andrew Rouble who has represented UBCO at each of their previous two appearances at the event. The fourth-year golfer is a former All-Canadian at the championship after finishing tied for fourth at the 2023 edition at FireRock Golf Club in Komoka, Ont.
A young Heat squad has just one other golfer who has previously competed at the Canadian championship.
Ryan Gillis will be making his second appearance after finishing in 13
th spot in 2024. Rookies
Thomas Lemay, the 2024 Canada West individual silver medalist,
Chris Jo and
Carl Arndt will all be making their first appearance for the Heat.
This year's national championship will feature 19 men's teams and 13 women's teams. The UBC Thunderbirds are the defending champions in both competitions.
The Heat women will get underway in Round 1 on Tuesday beginning at 8 a.m. while the men will begin teeing off in the afternoon at 1:30 p.m.
Following Thursday's third round, the field will be cut to the low nine men's teams and the low six women's teams, or any team within 15 shots of the lead. Individuals within 10 shots of the leader will also make the cut, or any player within the top 10.
