SURPRISE, Ariz. – The UBCO Heat women's and men's golf teams brought home their first team championships of the season on Tuesday as they each won the OUAZ Fall Invitational, an NAIA event hosted by the Ottawa Spirit at the Sterling Grove Golf and Country Club.
Leading the way for the Heat women was star
Julia Alexander-Carew who put together one of the best performances in program history at the event. The third-year shot seven-under par 209 over the three-round event, winning by nine shots over Emma Marshall from Embry-Riddle to claim her sixth career individual championship with the Heat
Alexander-Carew opened the tournament with a blistering round of five-under par 67 in which she fired six birdies compared to just one bogey. Her next two rounds saw her shoot 72 and 70 as she posted eight more birdies and six more bogeys.
Three other members of the Heat earned top 10 finishes including fourth-year
Bess Chan who shot seven-over par 223, fifth-year
Emily Cornwall who finished at 11-over par 227 to tie for seventh while rookie
Shinyao Zhang tied for ninth at 12-over par 228.
The team win was the first for the Heat since winning the Vikes Spring Shootout in March of 2024.
As for the Heat men, they earned their first team title since winning gold at the Canada West Championships last October as they posted a 13-shot victory over the Clarem-Mudd-Scripps Stags, shooting three-under par 861 over three rounds.
UBCO led from wire-to-wire at the event thanks to a strong opening round of five-under par 283 and continued to build their lead from there over the final two rounds.
Rookie
Oakley Mayner was the Heat's top performer on the individual leaderboard as he finished in third place in just his third university-level event. The Kelowna native was consistent over the three rounds, posting scores of 70, 70 and 71 to finish at five-under par 211.
The remaining four Heat golfers all finished inside the top 20 in the 60-player field including fourth-year
Andrew Rouble who posted his best showing of the season, finishing tied for ninth at two-over par 218.
The event marked the final tune-up for the Heat before they compete in the Canada West Championships from October 20
th to 21
st. The two-round championship will be hosted at the Chilliwack Golf Club.
