CHILLIWACK, B.C. – The UBCO Heat women's golf team won their third consecutive silver medal at the Canada West Championships on Tuesday afternoon following a highly-competitive two rounds at the Chilliwack Golf Club.
The Heat, featuring
Julia Alexander-Carew,
Lauren Nedo,
Bess Chan,
Shinyao Zhang and
Kiana Chen, combined to shoot one-under par 431, the best-ever score the team has posted at a conference championship.
The result left them six shots behind the UBC Thunderbirds, who fired a two-day total of seven-under par 425 to claim their sixth-consecutive Canada West title.
Victoria finished third at 27-over par 459.
Despite not winning gold, UBCO closed the gap on the team that has dominated university women's golf for the last decade. After finishing 34 shots behind the Thunderbirds last year, the Heat improved that number to just six this year as they continue to search for their ultimate goal of a conference or national championship.
Alexander-Carew led the way for the Heat in the event as she finished in second place on the individual leaderboard to claim the individual silver medal, shooting two-under par 142.
After an ever-par 72 first round, Alexander-Carew fired four birdies to just two bogeys on Tuesday to earn her way onto the podium, earning her first-ever Canada West individual medal. Her performance also earned her a nod as a Canada West First Team All-Star.
Nedo joined her as a first team all-star as she finished in fourth place at one-over par 145. The fifth-year had four birdies, a bogey and two double bogeys in her final round.
For the second straight year, Chan was named a Canada West Second Team All-Star after she finished tied for sixth at three-over par 147. The fourth-year had four birdies and six bogeys in a steady second round performance.
Rookies Zhang and Chen finished in a tie for eighth place as they produced impressive showings in their first-ever conference championship. Both shot four-over par 148 for the event.
The Heat will compete in one final event in the fall term before breaking until the spring. They are set to travel to Arizona to play in the Firestorm Fall Invitational, set for November 3 to 5 at the Verrado Golf Club.
