Dinos strike early to down women's soccer

Box Score

KELOWNA, B.C. - The UBC Okanagan Heat women's soccer team were unable to make it a perfect weekend to kick off their 2022 season as they dropped a 2-0 decision to the Calgary Dinos on Sunday afternoon at Nonis Sports Field.

One day after a season-opening win over UNBC, the Heat fell behind early as the Dinos' Erica Mysko of Calgary, put the visitors up early in the 5th minute of the match.

Shortly after, the Dinos doubled their lead in the 18th minute with a goal from Mykena Walker of Airdrie, Alta., to put them up 2-0.

The Heat had multiple opportunities to respond but the stifling defence of the Dinos held them scoreless over the entirety of the match.

TOP PERFORMERS

Molly Race, the second-year goalkeeper out of Vernon, B.C., was active in net today, saving a total of five shots and keeping the game close after her team fell behind early.

Mykena Walker - Calgary Dinos

Walker, a rookie defender, was strong on the backline for the Dinos all afternoon and her goal came off an impressive attempt from 25 yards out.

WHERE THEY SIT

The loss on Sunday afternoon puts the Heat's record at 1-1-0, which drops them into a tie for third place in the Canada West West division. Meanwhile, the Dinos moved into second place alone in the West division after a perfect 2-0-0 start to the year.

UP NEXT

The Heat will look to rebound in their next match as they continue their season-long four-game home stand on Friday, September 9th against the Saskatchewan Huskies. The team will be hosting their Pups at the Pitch night where fans are invited to bring their dogs along for the game. Kickoff is slated to start at 5 p.m and tickets for the game are free.
