Women's basketball unable to recover from first-half deficit, fall to Vikes

Box Score

VICTORIA, B.C. - The UBC Okanagan Heat women's basketball team found themselves down 11 points after the first quarter, a deficit they could not overcomes, as they fell 84-73 to the Victoria Vikes on Friday at the CARSA Performance Gym.

Runs in the second and fourth quarter would get the visiting Heat within six and five points respectively, but each streak would be met by a resilient Vikes squad, who put up equivalent runs of their own.

For Victoria, Ashlynn Day, a fourth-year from Kelowna, B.C., led the way for the Vikes, with 24 points. An Immaculata graduate, Day, shot 47 percent from the field and 30 percent from beyond the arc.

Surprise Munie, from Vancouver, had her second-straight 21 point performance, adding three assists and three steals.

UBCO's Kelsey Falk, from Vernon, B.C. had her third straight double-double to open the year. The third-year guard put up 21 points and 10 boards in the loss.

The Vikes out-rebounded the top rebounding team in Canada West, UBCO, 48-35 in the win. They were also able to win the shooting battle, 46 percent to 42 percent from the field.

UVIC's win is the second in a row as they improve to 2-1 on the year, while the Heat fall to 1-2 on their campaign.

The two teams rematch tomorrow night at 5 p.m. in Victoria.
