Box Score VANCOUVER: The UBC Okanagan Heat women's soccer team's possession-heavy game plan was overpowered by the No. 4 ranked team in Canada, as the UBC Thunderbirds came out on top 3-0 Friday night at Thunderbird Stadium.
For the Heat and Head Coach Craig Smith, the possession-centric style of play proved unsuccessful, as the Thunderbirds were able to capitalize on their chances in the first of back-to-back games between the sister schools.
UBC's Danielle Steer of Surrey, B.C., was the story of the game, recording a hat-trick to help the home team maintain their unblemished record on the season
Steer would open the scoring in the 12th minute. The fourth-year made no mistake burying her eighth goal of the season, finding the ball off a rebound and lofting one past Molly Race's right side.
Steer added her second goal on the night in the 38th minute. She would fire a ball past an outstretched Race off a turn-and-shoot play, upping the lead to two. She would add her third on a penalty kick in the 67th minute.
The best chance for UBCO came off the foot of Erica Lampert in the 47th minute, but the set-piece attempt was swallowed up by UBC's keeper Emily Moore of Victoria.
Chloe Dalgarno, a Kelowna, B.C., native and Okanagan Mission SS grad, made her first career start for the visiting Heat, playing 45 minutes.
Vernon's Race racked up five saves for the Heat, while Moore was perfect for the T-Birds, recording her fourth clean sheet of the season.
Race, in her rookie season, has now started all seven games for the Heat. She is up to 44 saves on the year.
The loss drops the Heat to 0-4-3 on their campaign while the Thunderbirds improve to 7-0-0.
