HEAT THIS WEEK: Women’s soccer and men's rugby at home; five other teams on the road

KELOWNA, B.C. - The Heat are back on home turf this weekend, with women's soccer hosting the Trinity Western Spartans and Victoria Vikes, and men's rugby taking on the Mount Royal Cougars. Five other teams are travelling. Cross country will race at the Bill Roe Cross Country Classic, while softball will play in another action-packed weekend. Men's soccer faces the Calgary Dinos, and men's golf tees off at the Western Washington Invitational.

Women's soccer looks to build on their first point of the season after earning a hard-fought draw against the UFV Cascades last weekend. This week, the team returns home to face the No. 9 ranked TWU Spartans for the second time this season before taking on the Victoria Vikes.

Second-year defender Julia Hannan, a product of Calgary, Alta., earned Athlete of the Week honours due to her steady presence on the back line last weekend. Hannan made her fourth consecutive start and played the full 90 minutes in the draw against the Cascades. She also competed well in one-on-one battles against No. 1 ranked UBC Thunderbirds' top attackers on Friday, helping deny multiple scoring chances.

Heading into this weekend, the Heat (0-3-1) face a tough test against Trinity Western (3-1-2) as they continue to search for their first victory of the season. UBCO will then have the opportunity to build on their previous success as they take on Victoria (0-1-3), having won their previous matchup 2-1 last October.

Men's Rugby

Men's rugby will be on its home pitch for the first time of the 2026-27 season as they face off against the MRU Cougars.

The Heat men will be hunting for their first points of the season after falling 24-19 to the Calgary Dinos last weekend. Historically, UBCO has dominated their matchups against Mount Royal, holding a 6-0 conference record and riding a six-game win streak. In their last meeting at home, the Heat earned a 54-0 shutout victory last October.

This weekend, the Heat cross country teams are travelling to Bellingham, Wash., to compete in the 52nd annual WWU Bill Roe Cross Country Classic at Hovander Homestead Park, hosted by the Western Washington Vikings.

The Heat will seek a weekend of strong results as they continue to prepare and build toward qualifying for the U SPORTS Championships, which take place this November in Hamilton, Ont.

Softball (13-5-1) is back on the road for their final weekend before the Western Collegiate Softball Association (WCSA) Championship, taking place October 2-4 in Calgary. The team will travel down to Victoria, where they will face three opponents over five games, including the Saskatchwean Huskies (10-9-0), Victoria Vikes (13-5-1), and the Regina Cougars (7-10-2).

Last weekend, Athlete of the Week Katie Nelson was a key contributor during the Heat's 3-3 road trip in Lethbridge, Alta. The Langley, B.C., product finished the weekend with a .462 batting average, .529 on-base percentage, four runs batted in (RBI), five runs scored, and a stolen base. She also recorded 11 putouts for a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage. In the Heat's 6-2 win over the Victoria Vikes, the third-year second base/shortstop singled in the fifth inning to help seal the game.

This weekend will be crucial for the Heat as they look to maintain the top position in the WCSA standings. They are currently tied with Victoria, with both teams holding a 12-9-2 conference record. The Heat will look to Nelson, who sits third in the league in batting average (.465), and Taylor McRae, who ranks fourth in batting average (.464) and third in earned run average (ERA) (2.49).

Men's Soccer

Men's soccer is travelling to Calgary to face the Calgary Dinos before taking on the No. 7 ranked Mount Royal Cougars the following day.

Although the Heat dropped both decisions last weekend, this group found the back of the net twice. In the UBC Thunderbirds match, Gavin La Montagne answered UBC's early opener with an equalizer in the 15th minute, marking his first goal of the season. Against the UFV Cascades, Ian Klumpen scored in the 66th minute off an assist from Abhijeet Kaler.

With the men finding more success towards goal, the team will look to carry this momentum as they battle this week's set of opponents. The Heat are searching for a win off the Dinos, as they currently hold a 2-3 all-time conference record against them, while they will be looking for their first conference win against the Cougars after posting a 0-2-2 mark in previous meetings.

Men's golf is back in action after a week off for their second tournament appearance of the season. The Heat will travel to Bellingham, Wash., to compete in the Western Washington Invitational, an NCAA Division II event hosted by the Western Washington Vikings at the Bellingham Golf and Country Club.

The Heat finished second at the event last year, posting an impressive team score of 11-under-par 853. Ryan Gillis will be one to watch after finishing tied for sixth at five-under-par 211 in last year's tournament. Also competing for the Heat will be Oakley Mayner, Jackson Murphy, Andrew Rouble, and Brayden Card, who will be making his first tournament appearance with the Heat.
