ABBOTSFORD, B.C. — The UBCO Heat dropped a 5-1 decision to the UFV Cascades on Saturday at Rotary Stadium. The Heat put three of their five shots on goal, while the Cascades finished with the 12-5 shot advantage.
Ian Klumpen led the way for the Heat with his first goal of the season on his lone shot on goal.
Abhijeet Kaler set him up with an assist off the bench, while Woodroffe played all 90 minutes in goal and made three saves.
Both penalty kicks, including the game-winning goal, for UFV were taken and converted by Spencer Mellett, as he paired them with an assist.
The scoring was opened early in the 14th minute by Kevin Mailand, while Mateo Brazinha added a goal and was able to put both of his attempts on target. Michael Beecroft also found the back of the net and similarly finished the match with two shots.
UFV held an 8-2 shot advantage in the opening half and managed six attempts on goal compared with just one for the Heat. Ronan Woodroffe made three saves, but UFV found the back of the net three times to take a comfortable 3-0 lead into the break.
Two of the three second-half attempts from the Heat were placed on target, including Klumpen's goal from Kaler in the 66th minute. Earlier in the frame, La Montagne struck the post as UBCO looked to get on the scoreboard.
UFV generated four shots and three corner kicks after the break before scoring twice late. One goal came off a free kick that sailed over everyone in the box and found its way in as the Cascades outscored the Heat 2-1 in the half and 5-1 overall.
The Heat are back in action next week as they travel to Calgary to face the Calgary Dinos on Saturday, Sept. 26, at 3:30 p.m.
