KELOWNA, B.C. – For the first time in team history, two members of the UBCO Heat men's volleyball team were named Canada West All-Stars in the same season as the conference announced its all-stars and all-rookie team on Wednesday.
Fifth-year setter
Zach van Geel was named a Canada West First Team All-Star in his final year with the Heat while fourth-year middle was recognized as an all-star for the second straight season, earning a nod as a Canada West Second Team All-Star.
Van Geel, a 6-5 setter, joins Weststrate as the only Heat players to be named a Canada West First Team All-Star after an outstanding all-around season. He recorded 9.44 assists per set, the fourth-best number in the conference and the second highest mark in team history. His 670 assists rank him fourth all-time in UBCO history for assists in a single season as he set the Heat career record for assists, finishing his time with the Heat with 2779.
The Calgary native also shone on the defensive side of the ball, finishing sixth in the conference in digs per set at 1.87 for 133 total digs while recording 53 total blocks. He would add 39 kills and 16 aces for 87 total points.
Meanwhile, Weststrate continued to be a force in the middle of the court for the Heat in 2025-26. The Kelowna native finished second in the conference in blocks per set, registering 1.19 this season while his 92 total blocks were tops among all players in Canada West. He would also record 117 digs, the highest number among middles, good for 1.52 per set.
Offensively, his 0.354 hitting percentage ranked him ninth in the conference as he finished the year with 187 kills. He would add 15 aces for 259.5 total points, the highest total of his UBCO career.
Weststrate's recognition makes him the first player in team history to be named a Canada West all-star in multiple seasons and just the 16th in UBCO history.
