Maria Georgacacos leads Heat to first victory

KELOWNA, B.C. — The UBCO Heat defeated the UNBC Timberwolves 3-2 on Friday at Nonis Sports Field, to capture their first win of the season.

For the Heat, Maria Georgacacos had a career-high two goals and a season-high seven shots, putting five on goal. Megan Sun added a goal by converting her penalty-kick attempt, while Allyson Ford made all four of her saves in the first half to earn the victory.

The Timberwolves' Maresha Manulak scored on three shots, putting two on goal. Aimee Glasser put one of her two shots in the back of the net, while goalkeeper Johanna Rathke finished with seven saves over 90 minutes.

UBCO and UNBC each generated six shots and put four on net in the first half, with Ford making four saves. Maria Georgacacos opened the scoring off an assist from her sister Eleni Georgacacos to give UBCO a 1-0 halftime lead.

Taking control in the second half, UBCO generated an 8-6 shot edge and five corner kicks to UNBC's one, while Rathke made four saves. Maria Georgacacos continued to apply pressure in offensive side and was taken down in the 51st minute. Sun then found the back of the net on a penalty kick for her second goal of the year and the team's second of the match.

After the Timberwolves tied the match 2-2, the Heat did not give up as they scored their third goal in the 85th minute as Maria Georgacacos took advantage of deflection off a Timberwolves' defender. Ford and UBCO held out strong for the victory, moving their record to 1-6-2 as they look to make a late season run to the playoffs.

Up next, the Heat host the UFV Cascades on Sunday, Oct. 11, at noon at Nonis Sports Field for their Graduating Athlete Celebration, as Allyson Ford, Nina Louis, and Megan Sun will be recognized before the game in a special ceremony.
