KELOWNA, B.C. — The UBCO Heat sent their graduating athletes
Nina Louis,
Megan Sun, and
Allyson Ford off in style, blanking the UFV Cascades 3-0 on Sunday in their final home game of the season at Nonis Sports Field. Sun netted a brace and Ford posted a clean sheet as the Heat earned their second consecutive win to complete a six-point weekend.
Sun led the Heat attack, putting all four of her shots on goal while finding the back of the net twice, including once from the penalty spot.
Maria Georgacacos opened the scoring and was credited with the game winner, while sister
Eleni Georgacacos served her the assist and added one shot of her own. Between the sticks, Ford made five saves over the full 90 minutes to secure her first clean sheet of the season.
Kenzie Fitzgerald was busy at both ends for the Cascades, putting two shots on target and even making a defensive save. Keanna Bentley put one of her two attempts on target, while Camryn Lyon added a defensive save of her own. Alana Madec made two saves over 90 minutes in goal for the Cascades.
The Heat set the tone early, earning three corners inside the opening 15 minutes on their way to a 6-2 shot edge and a 3-1 advantage in corners in the half. The breakthrough came in the 36th minute, when
Maria Georgacacos kept running after losing an exchange and was found by a decisive through ball from
Eleni Georgacacos before slotting her finish cleanly into the bottom left corner. Ford made one save as UBCO took a 1-0 lead into the break.
Doubling the lead with a screamer, Sun sent a free kick from well outside the box over Madec perfectly into the top right corner for a goal-of-the-year contender. The graduating athlete added her second from the penalty spot to complete her brace. The Cascades pushed for a response late in the game, outshooting the Heat 6-4 in the half, but Ford stood tall with four saves, including three in a late flurry, to preserve the shutout.
The UBCO Heat women's team's late season surge to try and make the playoffs continues on the road as they face the Trinity Western Spartans on Friday, Oct. 16, at 7:15 p.m. in Langley, B.C.
