Strong debut for Varney as Heat fall in narrow contest

VICTORIA, B.C. — The UBCO Heat fell short to the Victoria Vikes 1-0 on Sunday on the road in Victoria, B.C. The Heat's Jill Varney made 11 saves as the Vikes held a 27-7 advantage in shots and a 12-2 edge in shots on goal.

In her first ever start, Varney recorded 11 saves over 90 minutes, making five in the first half and six in the second while only allowing one penalty kick goal. Caitlyn Chiu led the Heat with two shots and put one on target.

Scarlett McNeely led Victoria with six shots and put four on goal. Ruby Nicholas scored on her only penalty kick attempt while Abby McDonald put all four of her shots on goal. Goalkeeper Stefanie Mocnik made two saves over 90 minutes and recorded a clean sheet for the Vikes.

Victoria outshot UBCO 12-2 in the first half and put six attempts on target, scoring on Nicholas' penalty kick in the seventh minute. Varney made five saves for the Heat, including three during a late stretch in which the Vikes generated seven attacking actions without adding to its lead before halftime.

In the scoreless second half, Victoria outshot UBCO 15-5, putting six attempts on goal that Varney saved. The Heat generated a late push with three shots and a corner kick near the end of the match including a save on Maria Georgacacos' shot attempt in the 89th minute. The score remained 1-0 through that stretch.

Up next, the Heat host the UNBC Timberwolves on Friday, Oct. 9, at 5 p.m. at Nonis Sports Field for their Soccer for Cancer match.
