Women's soccer falls to No. 5 Spartans at home

Heat gets goals from Taneda and Gross but Trinity Western counters with four of their own

KELOWNA, B.C. — The U SPORTS No. 5-ranked Trinity Western Spartans (2-1-0) defeated the UBC Okanagan Heat women's soccer team (0-2-1) by a score of 4-2 on Friday evening at Nonis Sports Field.

The first half between UBCO and Trinity Western saw an early defensive battle, with both goalkeepers busy. The Heat's Talia Gagnon made several key saves, including a shot by Trinity Western's Sophie Crowther in the sixth minute. Trinity Western broke through in the 30th minute with a goal by Mansha Sidhu, assisted by Crowther, and quickly capitalized with another goal by Luciana Andrews just two minutes later. The Heat responded in the 35th minute with a goal from Abigail Taneda, assisted by Caitlyn Chiu, narrowing the deficit to 2-1 by the end of the half.

The second half began with Trinity Western applying early pressure, resulting in a goal by Sidney Giesbrecht in the 49th minute, assisted by Sidhu, to extend their lead to 3-1. UBCO responded with multiple attempts, but shots by Taneda and Maria Georgacacos were either high or saved by Trinity Western goalkeeper Yasmine Pahal. 

Trinity Western capitalized again in the 74th minute when Kylie Hendricks scored with an assist from Crowther, increasing the lead to 4-1. The Heat managed to narrow the gap in the 81st minute with a penalty kick goal by Annika Gross, marking her first of the season, but Trinity Western maintained their advantage to secure the victory.

Taneda scored once for the Heat, converting one of her two shots. Gross also found the back of the net, scoring on her only shot which was a successful penalty kick. Chiu contributed with an assist, enhancing the team's offensive efforts. In goal, Gagnon recorded seven saves against 11 shots faced.

Looking ahead, UBCO is set to host the UFV Cascades on Saturday, September 6. The game will take place at Nonis Sports Field, with play beginning at 5:30 p.m. 

Game Notes:
- Taneda's goal was the 7th of her Heat career, moving her into sole possession on UBCO's all-time scoring list
- Chiu's assist in the first half was the first point of her Heat career
