KELOWNA, B.C. — The UBC Okanagan Heat women's soccer team (1-2-1) secured a 1-0 victory over the UFV Cascades (2-4-0) at Nonis Sports Field, with a decisive first-half goal and a shutout performance by their goalkeeper.
UBCO started the first half with a strong offensive push, taking the lead in the 11th minute when
Neala Peters scored, assisted by
Abigail Taneda, marking Peters' first goal of the season.
The Heat continued to apply pressure with multiple shots on goal, including attempts by
Eleni Georgacacos and Taneda, both saved by UFV's goalkeeper Alana Madec. Despite two offside calls against UBCO, the home team maintained control, earning corner kicks at both the 28th and 38th minutes. UFV had limited opportunities, with Jaidyn Jackson's lone shot going wide left just before the end of the half.
The second half between the Heat and UFV saw the Cascades generate an offensive chance in the 56th minute but Eesha Mudaliar's shot was saved by
Talia Gagnon.
The Heat's Taneda was a key playmaker, taking multiple corner kicks and delivering shots on goal, with a notable save by UFV goalkeeper Madec at the 59th minute. Despite several attempts by both teams, including a header by
Maria Georgacacos saved in the 85th minute, the game concluded with UBCO holding onto their 1-0 advantage.
Taneda contributed an assist and led the team with four shots, including two on goal. Peters found the net once, converting both of her shots into efforts on target.
Eleni Georgacacos added to the offensive effort with two shots, one of which was on goal. Gagnon, in goal, recorded one save while maintaining a clean sheet over 90 minutes of play.
In their next game, UBCO will travel to Prince George, B.C., to face the UNBC Timberwolves. The matchup is set for Friday, September 12 at 5:30 p.m.
