KELOWNA, B.C. — The UBCO Heat edged the Vancouver Island Mariners 95-92 in a thrilling contest to open their preseason schedule at the UBCO Gymnasium on Friday night.
Jalen Shirley led the Heat with 31 points, nine of which came from the free-throw line, and distributed a team-high 11 assists.
Isaak Moore added 27 points, hitting five three-pointers and contributing three steals defensively.

Anthony Brady chipped in 14 points, converting three of four attempts from beyond the arc and blocking two shots.
In the first quarter, VIU established an early lead as UBCO struggled with turnovers, committing eight, which contributed to the Mariners' seven steals and efficient scoring on fast breaks. The visitors capitalized on these opportunities, converting 48 percent of their field goals and leading 26-15 at the end of the frame.
The Heat took control in the second quarter with an impressive 34-18 scoring advantage, fuelled by a strong shooting performance from beyond the arc, converting seven of their 10 3-point attempts. Key defensive plays, including six steals, helped capitalize on Vancouver Island's nine turnovers, creating scoring opportunities. Shirley's steady contributions, including a layup with 13 seconds remaining, capped the half with the Heat leading 49-44 at the close.
In the second half, the Heat and the Mariners were evenly matched, each scoring 22 points. UBCO's efficiency at the free-throw line was pivotal, converting all eight attempts, which helped counterbalance their eight turnovers. Defensively, the Heat held Vancouver Island to 38 percent shooting from the field, despite the visitors securing 11 rebounds. The Heat maintained a 71-66 lead at the end of the third quarter.
