Woodroffe sets single-game saves record in loss to No. 8-ranked Victoria

Fourth-year goalkeeper turns aside 12 shots as Heat fall 3-0 to Vikes

VICTORIA, B.C. — The UBCO Heat (0-7-2) dropped a 3-0 decision to the U SPORTS No. 8-ranked Victoria Vikes (7-1-2) on Friday night at Centennial Stadium.

From the opening kickoff, the Vikes were on the front foot and the team's persistent offence broke through in the 35th minute when Archie Tugwell scored, assisted by Alexander Moody, marking the first goal of the season for Tugwell.

Woodroffe made crucial saves to keep his team in the match the rest of the half, including stopping shots from Jack Napier-Ganley and Connor Legge, but UBCO ended the first half trailing 1-0.

Victoria continued to push the pace in the second half. Woodroffe made several crucial saves early, including stops against shots by Matteo Hilton and Matthew Pearse in the early minutes.

Despite his efforts, Victoria's Matthew Pearse extended the lead in the 69th minute with a goal, assisted by Evan Larson. Just minutes later, Wesley Jones brought Victoria's lead to 3-0, with an assist from Aiden Grew. The Heat struggled to respond offensively, managing only one shot on goal, while Victoria maintained control with several corner kicks and shots throughout the half.

Woodroffe recorded an impressive 12 saves, with eight coming in the second half alone. Jacobo Saenz Ramos managed two shots, though neither found the target.

The next challenge for UBCO sees them heading to Vancouver, B.C., where they will take on the U SPORTS No. 1-ranked UBC Thunderbirds. The match is set for Saturday, Sept. 27, at 7 p.m. This encounter promises to test UBCO as they face off against a local rival.
