Reigning U SPORTS Champion wins first race against Canada West competition to help women’s cross country finish third while men finish seventh

CALGARY – UBCO Heat cross country runner Lauren McNeil picked up where she left off last season as she won her first race against university competition this year, winning the Western Canadian Invitational on Saturday morning.

McNeil, the reigning U SPORTS Champion, posted a time of 27 minutes and 33 seconds on the eight-kilometer course, over a minute and a half ahead of second-place Marisha Thompson from the Victoria Vikes.

Two other members of the Heat women's team finished inside the top ten finishers to help UBCO to a third-place finish in the team standings. Tori Bouck finished fifth in 29:30 while Sophie Hamilton, last year's U SPORTS Rookie of the Year, was ninth in 29:42.

The UBC Thunderbirds finished first in the team standings with 38 points while the Victoria Vikes were second with 48. The Heat came third after posting 63 points.

In the men's race, it was fourth-year Owen Lloyd leading the charge as he crossed the line in 12th place in a time of 26:05. Kyle Porter also snagged a top 20 finish thanks to his time of 26:20, good for 19th overall.

As a team, the men would finish in seventh place with the Victoria Vikes taking home top spot.

Both teams have one final race remaining before the Canada West Championships as the end of the month as they will compete in the BC Club Championships in Vernon on Saturday, October 18.
