Shaw brace lifts men's soccer to crucial win over UNBC

Heat rally from early deficit to earn first win of the season 3-2 over Timberwolves

KELOWNA, B.C. — The UBCO Heat (1-8-2) edged past the UNBC Timberwolves (3-7-2) with a 3-2 victory on Saturday at Nonis Sports Field.

The Heat seized the lead with two first-half goals, while UNBC matched with two of their own before halftime. UBCO secured the win with a decisive goal in the second half, marking the game-winning effort. They recorded 17 shots, with nine on target, while UNBC posted 15 shots, also with nine on target.

The first half began with UNBC taking an early lead in the 2nd minute when Jamie Wildash-Chan scored, assisted by Pipeijn van der Ende. UBCO responded with consistent pressure, and Jaise Shaw leveled the score with a goal in the 30th minute. Momentum shifted further in the Heat's favor when Malachi Emerson converted a penalty kick in the 37th minute, putting the home team ahead.

As the half progressed, UNBC managed to equalize with a goal from Hagon Kim in the 43rd minute, assisted by Wyatt Lyon. Both teams entered halftime locked in a 2-2 tie, setting the stage for a competitive second half.

The second half began with UBCO maintaining their momentum. In the 63rd minute, Shaw found the back of the net with an assist from Aidan Young, marking his second goal of the season and the game, increasing UBCO's lead to 3-2.

UBCO's defence, led by Ronan Woodroffe, made several crucial saves, including shots from UNBC's Isaac Tate and Luke Graham, preserving the lead. Despite a series of shots and two yellow cards issued to Heat players, they managed to hold their advantage, concluding the match with a 3-2 victory over UNBC.

Shaw led the UBCO offence with two goals and recorded the game-winning goal, converting four out of his five shots on target. Emerson found the back of the net, scoring one of his two shots on goal. Woodroffe, protecting the net, posted seven saves to record the win. Young contributed with an assist, adding to the team's offensive efforts.

In their next game, the Heat will rematch with the UNBC Timberwolves at Nonis Sports Field. The match is set for Sunday, October 5 at 1 p.m.

- Shaw's brace was the first of his UBCO career and the fourth brace scored by a Heat player in team history
- Emerson's goal was the ninth of his Heat career, two behind Luke Warkentin for the most in team history
