Men's soccer drops 3-0 decision to UNBC

Heat set a team record for most shots attempted in a game but are unable to find the back of the net

KELOWNA, B.C. — The UBCO Heat men's soccer team (1-9-2) fell to the UNBC Timberwolves (4-7-2) with a 3-0 defeat at Nonis Sports Field on Sunday afternoon.

The first half between UBCO and UNBC began with both teams testing each other's defences, but neither was able to find the back of the net early on. UBCO's Malachi Emerson had two attempts saved by UNBC's goalkeeper Yanni Ntapas in the 4th and 16th minutes. UNBC's Isaac Tate was also active in attack, taking a header shot that went high after a corner kick in the 15th minute.

The decisive moment came in the final seconds of the half when Tate scored in the 45th minute, assisted by Jamie Wildash-Chan, giving UNBC a 1-0 lead going into the break.

UNBC maintained offensive pressure early in the second half, culminating in several attempts on goal. Wildash-Chan had two early shots, with one saved by UBCO's goalkeeper Ronan Woodroffe and another blocked.

Needing a result to continue to close the gap on UNBC in the Canada West standings, the Heat through everything they could on goal late in the match. However, UNBC iced the game in stoppage time as Wildash-Chan scored in the 90th minute, marking his fifth goal of the season. Mehdi Bounaaja followed with a goal in the same minute, securing a 3-0 victory for UNBC over the home team.

Despite 28 shots from the Heat, including 14 on goal, the team could not find the back of the net.

Oliver Deveau led UBCO with four shots, three of which were on goal, demonstrating a consistent offensive presence. Gavin La Montagne also contributed significantly, matching Deveau with five shots and three on goal. Andrew Matsugu added four shots, one of which was on target, providing additional pressure in the attacking third. Woodroffe recorded four saves, facing seven shots on goal throughout the match.

In their next game, UBCO will travel to Kamloops, B.C., to face off against the Thompson Rivers WolfPack on Friday, October 10. The match is set to begin at 5:30 p.m.
