KELOWNA, B.C. - The UBC Okanagan Heat women's volleyball team fell to the U SPORTS No. 7-ranked University of Manitoba Bisons in straight sets, 17-25, 17-25, 20-25, on Friday at the UBCO Gymnasium.

Despite the loss, Olivia Boulding had a strong game and led the team with 13 kills and a total of 13.5 points. Kylan Finseth finished the match with 30 assists, marking the seventh time this season she's hit the mark. Madison Gardner, who earned tonight's Player of the Game honors, was effective in attack with a .667 hitting percentage, contributing six kills and three blocks. Amaya Perry led the defence with 18 digs, providing stability in the backcourt. Lastly, Natalie Funk has been efficient in both attack and serve, achieving a .308 hitting percentage while registering two service aces.

In the first set, the Heat struggled against the defending Canada West champions, finishing with a 25-17 deficit. UBCO's Olivia Boulding and Amaya Perry contributed multiple kills, but Manitoba's effective serving, led by Brenna Bedosky with multiple aces, along with strong play from Andi Almonte and Raya Surinx gave the visitors the opening frame.

In the second set of the match, Boulding and Gardner each contributed multiple kills for the Heat, while Kylan Finseth assisted on numerous points. However, Manitoba capitalized on their opportunities with several service aces and effective kills, particularly from Bedosky and Surinx to claim the frame.

The third set was the best of the match for the Heat as strong service runs from Funk and Gardner helped them to a 16-11 lead. However, the Bisons responded with an 11-1 run, highlighted by three aces from Surinx, to reclaim control of the set and ultimately helping them claim the match.

With the loss, the Heat drop to 4-9 and remain in 10th place in the Canada West conference, holding down the final playoff spot. As for the Bisons, they improve to 9-4 and sit fourth in the conference.

The two teams will be right back at it on Saturday, January 18 when they close out their weekend doubleheader. First serve is set for 6 p.m. and tickets to the game can be purchsed at the door of the UBCO Gymnasium.
