Boulding sets multiple single-game records in four-set loss to No. 7 Bisons

Outside hitter Olivia Boulding set Heat records for most kills and most points in a four-set match on Saturday against Manitoba

KELOWNA, B.C. - Olivia Boulding set a pair of school records on Saturday night as the UBC Okanagan Heat women's volleyball team lost in four sets (23-25, 24-26, 25-20, 16-25) to the U SPORTS No. 7-ranked Manitoba Bisons at the UBCO Gymnasium.

Boulding was outstanding throughout the match as the Heat went shot-for-shot with the defending Canada West champions. She finished her night with an incredible 25 kills, three aces, a block and 10 digs for 28.5 points, setting new UBCO records for most kills and most points in a four-set match. Her 25 kills also tie her for 10th all-time in Canada West history for most kills in a four-set match.

Boulding's performance left her one kill and two points shy of the Heat's all-time single game records for kills and points in a match, set by Sydney Grills (26 and 30.5 respectively) during the 2022-23 season.

In addition to Boulding's efforts, Natalie Funk also had an impressive night, matching Boulding's three aces while adding 11 kills, thanks to a .458 hitting percentage, four blocks and two digs for 17 points.

Raya Surinx led the way for the Bisons with 20 kills and 27 points.

In the first set, Boulding was a standout performer with multiple kills, contributing significantly to her team's 23 points. Despite a strong mid-set run with service aces by  Funk that brought UBCO from a six-point deficit to a lead, Manitoba capitalized on key service aces and kills down the stretch to secure the set victory.

UBCO fell short in the second set against the Bisons, but once again Boulding led the home team with several key kills, contributing to a competitive but ultimately unsuccessful set. Kylan Finseth was instrumental with multiple assists, while Funk and Amaya Perry also added crucial points. Despite tying the score at multiple junctures, and earning a set point, UBCO was unable to convert late as Manitoba went up by two sets.

In the third set, UBCO secured a 25-20 win against the Bisons. Boulding led the home team with six kills and UBCO's service game was also effective, with Perry and Finseth each delivering a service ace. UBCO was also able to capitalize on Manitoba's attack errors to maintain their lead and close out the set.

In the fourth set, despite a strong start, highlighted by Boulding and Funk's early kills, UBCO struggled with consistency. Ultimately, a 9-1 run by the Bisons proved to be the difference in the frame as the visitors earned the victory.

Manitoba improves to 10-4 on the season with the win while the Heat drop to 4-10.

UBCO will now enjoy a bye week before returning to action on Friday, January 31 when they take on the Saskatchewan Huskies (7-7) in Saskatoon. First serve is set for 6:30 p.m. Pacific and the game can be seen live on CanadaWest.tv presented by BioSteel.
