Women’s soccer suffers one-goal loss to No. 7 Trinity Western

Annika Gross nets second of the season for the Heat in 2-1 loss to Spartans

LANGLEY, B.C. – The UBC Okanagan Heat women's soccer team suffered their second one-goal loss of the season to the U SPORTS No. 7-ranked Trinity Western Spartans on Friday night as they fell 2-1 on the road.

After missing a penalty early in the first half, the Spartans would grab the lead before the break through Kylie Hendricks of Maple Ridge, B.C., in the first minute of added time.

Before the halftime whistle blew, UBCO nearly tied the contest as Abigail Taneda of West Kelowna, B.C., set up Alyssa Scott of North Vancouver, B.C., but her shot rattled the crossbar and stayed out.

The Heat would be rewarded for their efforts early in the second half. In the 50th minute, after some lovely passing, Nina Louis of Vancouver found Annika Gross of Kelowna, B.C., in the box and she chipped a shot up and over Trinity Western goalkeeper Yasmine Pahal of Surrey, B.C., to tie the match at one.

The goal was Gross' second of the season and the first goal the Heat had scored against the perennial championship contending Spartans in three years.

However, just 10 minutes later, the Spartans would regain the lead thanks to a goal from Danielle Cooper of Surrey, B.C.

The Heat would push for an equalizer, firing four shots over the final 30 minutes but were unable to come away with a point.

Talia Gagnon of Dieppe, N.B., would finish the match with six saves for the Heat while Parhal earned the win making four saves.

The loss drops UBCO to 4-5-2 on the season as they sit two points up on the Thompson Rivers WolfPack (3-5-2) for the fourth and final playoff spot in the Pacific division. Meanwhile, Trinity Western (5-2-2) moves four points up on the Heat for third in the division.

UBCO will stay down in the lower mainland for their next match against the UFV Cascades (2-5-2) on Sunday, October 6. Kickoff is set for 12 p.m. and can be seen live in CanadaWest.tv.
