Clarke’s brace leads women’s soccer past UFV

In her first start of the season, the senior defender scores a pair of goals to lead UBCO to crucial 2-1 victory in race for the Canada West playoffs

ABBOTSFORD, B.C. – Senior defender Sophia Clarke played the hero on Sunday afternoon for the UBC Okanagan women's soccer team as she scored a pair of goals to help the Heat rally for a 2-1 victory over the UFV Cascades.

After the Heat fell behind 1-0 just four minutes into the match, Clarke tied the game in the 33rd minute. Off a corner from Abigail Taneda of West Kelowna, B.C., Clarke was able to get her head on it, beating UFV keeper Addy Chen of Edmonton, on a bounce to even the score at one.

The goal swung momentum in the Heat's favour and they nearly went ahead minutes before halftime but Nina Louis' (Vancouver) attempt from distance struck the crossbar and stayed out.

UBCO would keep up the pressure in the second half and were rewarded for their efforts with a fortunate bounce. An attempted clear by a UFV defender was blocked by Clarke and the ball sailed back over Chen's head and into the net to give the visitors the lead.

From there, Heat keeper Talia Gagnon of Dieppe, N.B., would shut the door, including claiming a pair of corners by the Cascades, to close out the victory.

Gagnon finished the match with three saves to pick up her fifth victory of the season.
