Men's volleyball falls to No. 10 Thunderbirds in three sets

First year libero Maxim Storozhuk made his Heat debut as the T-Birds took the opening match of 2024

KELOWNA, B.C. - In their first match up of 2024 the UBC Okanagan Heat men's Volleyball team fell to the UBC Thunderbirds in three sets at UBCO Gymansium.

The Heat kept it close in the first set keeping pressure on the Thunderbirds.  Renn Petryk, third-year outside hitter snagged a service ace pushing a Thunderbirds timeout.  In the late minutes of the frame the Thunderbirds built momentum, taking the set 25-18.
 
The 'Birds took control in the last two sets capturing their fifth consecutive win.

UBCO's Adam Einarson, a Lake Country, B.C. native, chalked up a career-high four kills while. Cade Hudson, of Burnaby, B.C. led the Heat with nine assists.

Making his debut for the Heat, Maxim Storozhuk led the Heat with six digs. The first year libero is a local of Kelowna, B.C. and a graduate of Kelowna Secondary.

TOP PERFORMERS

Jack Taylor - UBCO Heat

The rookie outside-hitter put down six kills while hitting an effective .455 percent. The first-year has seen his role grow within the team this season, recording five or more kills in five of his team's last eight outings.

Reeve Gingera - UBC Thunderbirds

The second-year outside hitter proved essential to his teams victory tonight putting down a game-high 13 kills. Gingera added two service aces for 15.5 points

WHERE THEY STAND

The Heat drop to 1-12 to start off the new year, sitting 12th in the conference. After a slow start the T-Birds are winners of eight of their last nine, improving to 9-4 this season, good for sixth in Canada West.
