Men's Basketball opens season with loss to Wesmen

UBCO got strong performances from Gavin Ashworth and Jalen Shirley as they fell in their season opener

KELOWNA, B.C. - The UBC Okanagan Heat men's basketball team lost their home opener 106-72 to the Winnipeg Wesmen on Friday night at the UBCO Gymnasium.

Playing with a short-handed lineup, the Heat battled hard throughout the contest and got some strong performances from a number of players. Third-year guard Jalen Shirley of Brampton, Ont., led the team in scoring, as he finished with 22 points for the Heat.
Jas Dhudwal, a fourth-year forward from Surrey, B.C., dressed in blue white and gold for the first time this evening after transferring from Langara College. Despite some early foul trouble, he managed to pull down nine rebounds, including six on the offensive glass.

Gavin Ashworth, a product of Grand Prarie, Alta., took home player of the game honours for the Heat as had himself an impressive outing. The third-year guard shot 50 percent from the field for 20 points in just 23 minutes before exiting due to injury.

In the fourth quarter, the Heat outscored the Wesmen 21-18 ending the game on a good note.

Playing their first games for the Heat alongside Dhudwal were Keaton Skelton (West Kelowna, B.C.), Lamine Conde (Montreal), Isaak Moore (Kelowna, B.C.) and Umer Hayat (Lake Country, B.C.).

TOP PERFORMERS
Jalen Shirley - UBCO

The third-year guard from Brampton, Ont., scored 12 points of his 22 points with the three ball, shooting 4-of-8 from deep. Shirley averaged 13.9 points per game last season.

Alberto Gordo - Winnipeg
The second-year guard led his team tonight in scoring and rebounds, putting up 3-of-6 from beyond the arc and amassing 22 points and eight rebounds.

WHERE THEY SIT

The Heat open up their season with a 0-1 record while the Winnipeg Wesmen earn a tick in the win column starting their season with a 1-0 record.
