Strong first half not enough to push men's basketball past the Wesmen

Jalen Shirley shines, but despite his strong performance, the Heat fall 89-75

KELOWNA, B.C. - The UBC Okanagan Heat men's basketball team got off to a quick start on Saturday but couldn't maintain their halftime lead as they fell 89-75 to the Winnipeg Wesmen at the UBCO Gymnasium.

Despite their roster beat up due to injuries, and using mainly just six players for much of the game, the Heat got off to a hot start in the match, thanks to the play of guard Jalen Shirley of Brampton, Ont., as well as a strong defensive effort. Shirley poured in 15 first-half points and the Heat forced 13 turnovers as they grabbed a 41-36 lead over one of the top team's in the conference.

However, the Wesmen, the a healthy and deep roster, found their game in the second half and pulled away from the Heat in the third, outscoring UBCO 27-15 to take a seven-point lead into the fourth.

The Heat would get the lead down to six mid-way through the final frame but Winnipeg locked down UBCO late to secure the win.
