Game Recap: Men's Volleyball | | Sophia Johansen

Men's volleyball falls to No. 2 Golden Bears in three sets

In the first game of their weekend doubleheader, the Heat drop decision to nationally-ranked Alberta

KELOWNA, B.C. - The UBC Okanagan Heat men's volleyball team started off their double header weekend against the U SPORTS No. 2-ranked Alberta Golden Bears with a hard-fought battle but ultimately the Golden Bears would take the match in three sets 20-25, 19-25, 19-25.

In the first set of the match, the Heat fought to stay within reaching distance of the Golden Bears, thanks to third-year outside hitter Renn Petryk.  Petryk put up five of his 11 kills on the evening in the first set. However, the Golden Bears would score the final five points of the set to grab the early advantage.

In the second set, second-year middle Thys Weststrate from Kelowna, B.C., helped the Heat take the early lead with one of his five kills on the night.  But Alberta would rally and another five-point run late in the set allowed the visitors to take a two sets to none lead.

During the final set of the match, the Heat put down a total of nine kills fighting to keep in reach of the Golden Bears, but it just wasn't enough as the Golden Bears took the match in three sets.
