Men’s volleyball fall to the Huskies at School Day Game in close three-set match

Renn Petryk put up 15 kills at the Heat's annual School Day Game as the Heat battled hard against nationally-ranked Huskies

KELOWNA, B.C. - Back after a weekend off to rest and recharge, the UBC Okanagan Heat men's volleyball team were back in action Friday morning as they started off their weekend at home against the Saskatchewan Huskies hosting their annual School Day Game.

Despite their efforts, the Heat fell to the Huskies in three sets 19-25-19, 24-26, 26-28 as they went point-for-point against the eighth-ranked team in the nation in front of a raucous crowd over nearly 700 elementary and middle school children. 


After the Huskies claimed the first set, in large part due to a 9-0 run in the middle of the set, the Heat kept scoring tight in the second set as they raised their consistency on offence. Both the Heat and Huskies would have nearly identical kill percentages, thanks to an impressive eight kills from the Heat's Renn Petryk (Edmonton) in the middle frame but a late three-point run would all Saskatchewan to pull out the set.

In the final set of the match, Petryk and rookie Jack Taylor of Winnipeg, would both put up four kills as once again the Heat went point-for-point with Saskatchewan. But once again, a three-point run to close out the set for clinch the match for the Huskies.

Taylor would finish the match with a total of seven kills, along with two aces, while hitting an impressive .429.


TOP PERFORMERS
Renn Petryk - UBCO Heat

The third-year outside hitter had an great match earning 15 kills, marking the second time this season he has earned 15 or more kills, one ace, two digs and three blocks, totaling 18 points, rightfully earning himself Player of the Game.

Jack McGeough - Saskatchewan Huskies
The third-year middle from Estevan, Sask., helped his team to victory this afternoon earning a total of 10 kills thanks to a hitting percentage of .833.

WHERE THEY SIT
With the loss, the Heat see their record drop to 1-6 while the Huskies have a conference-best mark of 6-1.

UP NEXT
The Heat are back at it on Saturday, November 18th as they face off against the Huskies for the second time this weekend looking to earn a weekend split.  The game starts at 1 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at the door.
