Men's volleyball drop second game of weekend doubleheader against Cougars

Thys Weststrate shines for the second-straight game as Heat fall in straight sets to Mount Royal

CALGARY - The UBC Okanagan Heat men's volleyball team dropped their second game of the weekend to the Mount Royal Cougars, falling in three sets on Saturday by scores 18-25, 22-25, and 25-27.

Despite the loss, middle Thys Westrate, a product of Kelowna, B.C., had a solid performance for the Heat, earning two aces in the first set and finishing the match with five kills, three aces and 11 points. In the third set the Heat kept the score close, battling one of the top team's in the conference point-for-point. The Heat started the set off with a four-point serving streak from Calgary native Zach van Geel, highlighting another big game from the third-year setter as he finished with 36 assists, two aces and four points. UBCO managed to push the final frame beyond 25 points but could not secure the set victory to extend the match.

Thys Weststrate - UBCO
The second-year middle had another great performance for the Heat as he led the team in blocks with four and aces with three while hitting an efficient .375 percent.

Samson Olson - Mount Royal
The second-year setter, coming all the way from Bergen, Norway, was a team leader in multiple aspects tonight earning himself 26 assists and six digs.

WHERE THEY SIT
After tonight's loss the Heat's record drops to 1-3 while the Cougars improve to 3-1 on the young season.

UP NEXT
The Heat are on the road again next weekend in Langley, B.C., as they face off for a double header weekend against the defending U SPORTS and Canada West champions, the Trinity Western Spartans. Their first game is on Friday, November 3 at 8 p.m. and the match can be watched live on Canada West TV.
